COMPASS ESL

The COMPASS ESL (English Second Language Test) is used for elementary or intermediate ESL students.

When is the test given?

  • The COMPASS ESL test is given Monday through Friday.
  • COMPASS ESL testing hours
    • No appointment is needed.
    • Please bring your fee payment receipt and picture ID.
  • The COMPASS ESL Test is not given on school holidays.

 Where is the test given?

What does it cost to take the test?

  • The testing fee is $10.00 paid by students who apply to Highline.
  • The retest fee is $8.00.
  • Take your fee payment receipt to the Placement and Testing Center.

What is the test like?

  • The COMPASS ESL test is computer-adaptive and not timed.
  • The COMPASS ESL test is composed of three tests - writing, reading and listening.
  •  The three tests combine to give a profile of a students language abilities.
  • The test spans the levels of English proficiency ranging from elementary to near college level.
